  1. Using MacBook with OS 10.7.5

    1) Look around the home page – what is your initial impression of what you see?
A bit confusing at first. The “About” section is a bit out of immediate site and takes a few second to find.

Layout is, with the exception of the About section, fairly logical and easy to follow.
Lists of abbreviations and acronyms are well laid out, with topical refinement options easily accessible.

    2) Think of something you want to find on this website. Now try to find it. Did you find what you were looking for? Was anything confusing?
Everything that I usually look for–Terms of Use and Privacy Policy–is easily accessible.
The Submit and Search options are easily accessible and user friendly.

    3) Are you encouraged to (create a new account, subscribe, sign up for a free trial, etc.)? Can you tell us why (or why not)?
While there are icons for Facebook, Twitter and other social media, these are “share link” and not sign in. Beyond that, there is nothing that indicates that I can sign in or register, or anything that tells me what extras such actions would provide if it was available.

    4) Go to search engine of your choice and find one other company that offers a similar service. Compare the two companies. Which on do you prefer? Why?
Acronymsearch.com and Acronymfinder.com are the first search results that appear. While fairly extensive, both primarily rely on direct input of the acronym. One does not provide an alphabetical index, and neither provide a topical index as found at A&S (or an Airport and Location section). Neither of them are as attractive as A&S.

Move the “About” blurb a bit higher up on the landing page, so that it is more immediately apparent.

A “share” title above the social media icons.

A ‘recently viewed’ list would be nice so that users can keep track of what they have looked up–maybe an option for registered users if you add that option.

Beyond that, and maybe a bit more colour to the page, the site is very well thought out. It is easy to search for acronym meaning by topic, letter, etc.

  2. 1) Look around the home page – what is your initial impression of what you see?
My initial impression is that this is a dictionary that contains Acronyms and slang, maybe even new urban words. I have no idea what initialisms are, and I seriously doubt anyone else knows what that means. If you are writing so people on a 5th grade reading level can understand, you could probably leave “initialisms” off of your tagline.
First thing I see is the logo, the words acronyms and slang, and then the social media buttons. The rest is text. I think having an acronym or slang word of the day is a good idea, but having the 20 most popular ones on the homepage is overkill, in my opinion.
I think you should also point out on the homepage or on pages that contain profanity a warning in case kids access your site. LMFAO is a great example of one that kids should not be able to access and chances are elementary or middle school children will try to look this up.
    2) Think of something you want to find on this website. Now try to find it. Did you find what you were looking for? Was anything confusing?
I looked up “YOLO” The most popular meaning was there but it was in the middle of the possibilities. I think you need to have the most popular definition to stand out or be first, rather than be in the middle of the definitions. Having 25 definitions for one acronym may be all encompassing, but it does not provide a definitive answer.
    3) Are you encouraged to (create a new account, subscribe, sign up for a free trial, etc.)? Can you tell us why (or why not)?
No. There is no incentive or reason to sign up for an account. There would be a possibility to bookmark this site, but really no reason to sign up. The truth is that most people just type in an acronym into Google and get their answer very quickly.
    4) Go to search engine of your choice and find one other company that offers a similar service. Compare the two companies. Which on do you prefer? Why?
I went to AcronymSearch.com. I think your site looks better and has a better logo. Their site looks like it was created in the 90’s.
    5) Please share any additional feedback/comments you may have.
    1. I don’t think you need the 20 most popular acronyms on your home page in that small font. I would recommend one acronym of the day or week and make it in a large font and have the definition. It should be family friendly with no profanity.
    2. The ‘About’ section on the bottom right hand of the homepage is way too wordy. Have an about page on the navigation bar, but not on the homepage.
    3. I like that you have a page dedicated to trending terms. I still think you need to use a larger font for all of the text on your website.

  3. 1) Look around the home page – what is your initial impression of what you see? My initial impression was that the graphics were visually pleasing and the page seemed well organized. I liked viewing the most recent acronyms and slang that were searched. The site was well organized and I was able to search for my slang easily. I also looked up a medical acronym that was listed and held great information on the topic of ADHD.

    2) Think of something you want to find on this website. Now try to find it. Did you find what you were looking for? Was anything confusing? I decided to see how you can submit an acronym or internet slang. I chose the slang word dope and I was walked through how to submit the word and define it. I was able to find the both the slang and the acronym I wanted to look up as well as learn how to submit one.
    3) Are you encouraged to (create a new account, subscribe, sign up for a free trial, etc.)? Can you tell us why (or why not)? This site was very user friendly and I would sign up for a free trial. There are many slang words and acronyms that kids today are using in my profession of education that I am unfamiliar with and this site was easy to use and very informative.
    4) Go to search engine of your choice and find one other company that offers a similar service. Compare the two companies. Which on do you prefer? Why? I went to urbandictionary.com to compare it to this site. I did like the top submitted words and slang definitions it used. I know students today talk like this and it was interesting to see how they use the slang in a sentence. I like how the site I am providing feedback for was organized though. It seemed less confusing and was much easier to navigate.
    5) Please share any additional feedback/comments you may have. The site is well organized and full of useful information. I would be encouraged to use it and would subscribe to it. I also like how easily you can connect to social networks and emails to share the information you find.

  4. 1) Look around the home page – what is your initial impression of what you see?
My first impression is that the site is very white. I think this gives a very clean look, if not a little plain.
The logo is very bright and flashy, but the design is lost now that it’s so small. Most of the acronyms it contains can’t be read at that resolution. That might not be terribly important, but I am a little curious of what the others say.
It is curious that the alphabetical tabs have such prominence. I wouldn’t think people would browse this way, but rather use the search bar or categories.
The recent slang and acronym definitions block doesn’t show a definition. It would be neat to at least get some teaser of what they’re about so I would want to click on them. Right now, I don’t have a reason to click on one versus the other.
I almost missed the About copy. It seems lost down there in the corner.

    2) Think of something you want to find on this website. Now try to find it. Did you find what you were looking for? Was anything confusing?
I searched for the acronym BBS in the search bar, expecting the first result to be “Bulletin Board System”. Though it’s interesting to know that BBS means quite a few things, I was surprized that what I thought was the most common definition today wasn’t even one of the first 20 results. Within the Techology tab, it’s much closer to the top, though I still expected it to be the first or second result.

    3) Are you encouraged to (create a new account, subscribe, sign up for a free trial, etc.)? Can you tell us why (or why not)?
In this case, I have nothing to add to what I’m looking for. I did eventually find the meaning of BBS as it relates to technology. So, I have no incentive to create an account and add further information. I was able to vote up the term without an account. It would be neat to tweet or share the definition, but the social networking buttons appear to just share the site, and not the specific piece of content I’m on.

    4) Go to search engine of your choice and find one other company that offers a similar service. Compare the two companies. Which on do you prefer? Why?
I used the site Acronymfinder as it was the first relevant result. Right off the bat, it’s look and feel is nowhere near as nice as Acronyms and Slang. The results not having any sense of weighted relevance or importance also exists on this site. And as far as I can tell, the results don’t have individule pages to share or print out. I prefer Acronyms and Slang.

    5) Please share any additional feedback/comments you may have.
I guess the sub-categories help make the Acronym definition more relevant to the user. But it’s still a lot of content to sort though. I wonder if these results are weighted in any way by either perceived cultural importance, or by the users of the site themselves. I think it would be nice to see the first few results be shown as more prominent. Or perhaps instead of category tabs, there is a call to action within the result itself. Example, “In they military, BBS is most commonly defined as… Click here to see more military results”. With a new line, “In technology and IT, BBS is most commonly defined as…” etc etc.

  5. 1) Look around the home page – what is your initial impression of what you see?
I thought the homepage tells pretty much everything about the site. It was easy to identify what service AcronymsAndSlang offers.
I like the simplicity of the layout. I just find the colors a bit dull, especially since the logo is colorful and cheerful looking. I also find the links placed on a white background a bit difficult to read.
Maybe it would be a lot more inviting to browse around the site if the colors are less dull. It sort of gives me an impression that the words I can find in the site are only technical/professional terms.

    2) Think of something you want to find on this website. Now try to find it. Did you find what you were looking for? Was anything confusing?
I tried using the Search box and it was pretty easy to use.
I especially liked the categorization since it made it a lot easier to find the word’s meaning.
At the page of the Acronym’s meaning, I had a little trouble finding its meaning. It might be because the font size was smaller than the rest of the text in the page so that I just skipped over it.
Also for the meaning, I was expecting to see an actual definition of the word and not just what the abbreviation stands for. So this is a bit of a put off for me.

    3) Are you encouraged to (create a new account, subscribe, sign up for a free trial, etc.)? Can you tell us why (or why not)?
I didn’t see a sign up page but I did see an option to give my email when submitting a word. But I don’t think I will sign up if there is an option to. I don’t find it necessary since I will be more interested in finding the meaning of words anyway.
I also tried rating the word meanings and it worked alright without having the need to log in.

    4) Go to search engine of your choice and find one other company that offers a similar service. Compare the two companies. Which on do you prefer? Why?
So I ended up at https://onlineslangdictionary.com/
The features of the two sites seems the same although I did find onlineslangdictionary a bit harder to navigate through.
I guess if I am doing a quick search of what a word stands for, I prefer Acronyms and Slang since it is easier and quicker use.
But if I am doing a more comprehensive search, I will go with Online Slang Dictionary. They offer more definitions aside from just the acronym’s meaning.

    5) Please share any additional feedback/comments you may have.
I find the colors a bit dull, making the text, especially the links, a bit difficult to read.
Also, maybe it would be better to use a bigger font size for the word meaning and perhaps a darker (or brighter) background for it cause it seems to be lacking emphasis on the page.
But all in all, I really like the site since it’s easy to use and searching for acronyms is pretty simple to do. I think this is a site I will definitely use.
