The site allows you to watch and ahare videos using facebook and twitter.

Go to https://www.frequency.com/topic/egypt and hit auto-scan. What do you think this does? What do you think of it?

Auto-scan seems to scan through the video and makes the video go a lot faster.  I think it’s very helpful.  No one likes watching a video that is long.

How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors?

I think this site compares very well to the competitors.  The site is easy to understand and navigate.

Would you use this site? If not, are there improvements that could be made that would change your mind?

I plan on using this site.  I think it’s a good site and I love the fact that I can use it through facebook and twitter.

Please share any additional feedback/comments you may have.

Overall, I think this site is great!!  I like the layout.  It is easy to understand and easy to navigate.  I think the “Trending Topics” is a good idea.

There are a few things that I suggest you change or improve:

The “feedback” and “contact” seem to be the same thing.  The “feedback” pulls up your e-mail adress and the “contact” send you to a page which provides the e-mail and physically address.  I am not sure what the point is for the two different links.  I suggest that you put the two links together into one.

The “Contact” page is very empty.  There is a lot of space on the right side of the page.  This is where you can put the feedback from people who use your service.

You site needs a “FaQ” link.  This link is where people can go and get answers for the most common questions asked.  This would save people time to have the questions answered right away instead of waiting for a response through e-mail.

On the “Homepage”, there is a big empty spot at the bottom on the left hand side.  I think it would be a good idea in you fill that spot up with the most watch video at that time.

When navigating the site, there is no “home” link.  I know if you click on the “logo” it will take you back to the “homepage” but most people won’t know that since it’s not common.  I think you should put a “home” link at the top of each page so that people will be able to navigate the site better.

This feature enhances the buffering speed of the video, enabling you to watch it continuously without waiting for it to load.

How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors?

This is a very great site that allows you for a faster streaming/ sharing of videos. Compared to other similar sites, i think its very easy to use and hassle free. You can enjoy watching different videos found in net all in thissite.

Would you use this site? If not, are there improvements that could be made that would change your mind?

Yes I would use it too, It’s very convenient and easy to use. It saves time and provides ease of access to videos found over the net.

Please share any additional feedback/comments you may have.

I’m really puzzled why the Egypt image that was featured in the Homepage. I think it’s very specific for it to be the displayed image. It would be great if it’s flashes of pics of what’s trending right now and not just featuring one image.

Contact Us seems to be lacking some little detail. It has more blank space.

There are 3 columns in the homepage (Featured Channel, Trending Topics, Most Active People.) It seems that they are equally divided in terms of space. I think the videos should be given much more importance/ weight in terms of presenting it to new users so it could easily get the idea that it is a site where videos are collected from all over the internet. it  could also help if the category section is in the homepage. it could help users to navigate to their desired category..

There’s no link to the Homepage.

  3. Visit https://www.frequency.com. Spend no more than 5-10 seconds on the home page. What do you think the site is about?

My initial impression is that this is a social video sharing platform, similar to YouTube, with sharing capabilities.

    Sign in with facebook.

I signed in with Facebook after visiting the login page.  It would be nice to have a “Facebook” connect button next to the login link so that I could immediately see I would not have to fill out registration information for another site.

Follow a couple of channels you are interested in.

I followed quite a few channels.  It was a nice option to simply select “follow” without having to go to the channel page before subscribing.
Go to https://www.frequency.com/topic/egypt and hit auto-scan. What do you think this does? What do you think of it?

I think that auto-scan allows you to preview snippets of video in quick succession to see if you are interested in the content without loading all the video from each link.  It’s a nice feature, but I would like to see it explained better, perhaps with a “What is autoscan?” link next to the button.

How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors?

I would say that it is on par with most other video sharing sites with two exceptions.  First, there should be an option to upload video.  Second, there are not many filtering options when doing a search, such as “Most Recent First/Latest”.
Would you use this site? If not, are there improvements that could be made that would change your mind?

I might use this site on occasion, but there are definitely improvements that could be made. First, I would like to see an easily accessible link to my video feed on the navigation bar.  Currently, I have to go back to the Channels page to access it.  There may be another way to get to it, but it’s not easy for the user to find.

Second, the frames on the video page can be annoying.  There is not much room in the place where you leave comments, so you’re left to scroll up and down when attempting to leave a comment.  This is cramped and makes user interaction less likely to take place.  The scrolling of the videos on the left side also interferes with enjoyment because, if you’re at the bottom of the videos, you have to scroll all the way back up to the top to stop the autoscan.

Finally, the Facebook/Twitter links should be icons, so users can immediately recognize where they can connect with Frequency through social networks.  And again, the Facebook connect link should be next to login/register.
Please share any additional feedback/comments you may have.

Overall I like the simple design and many of the features of the site, but think there are definitely tweaks that should be made to improve the user experience.  The usage of frames could remain, but they need to be less cramped for users with small screens (laptops and netbooks).  Also, the Frequency logo, which I expected to take me back to the home page, takes me to my video feed.  There does not seem to be a way to access the home page while I’m logged in.  These things should be very easy to fix to make this a really great site.

  4. Visit https://www.frequency.com. Spend no more than 5-10 seconds on the home page. What do you think the site is about?
It looks as though this is a site where you can watch and share videos to other social networking sites, although im not sure i 100% get it after 5-10 seconds. What would be the difference from just watching YouTube and clicking the share button?
    Sign in with facebook.
Follow a couple of channels you are interested in.
Go to https://www.frequency.com/topic/egypt and hit auto-scan. What do you think this does? What do you think of it?
Wow. I honestly couldnt tell you what the point of that was, other than to confuse the crap out of me. I dont know what that was for, and right now im getting annoyed with the site
How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors? I personally don’t like the site, the set up is too confusing, and as i stated earlier, I dont know what the difference would be to just go on YouTube and share the videos on your facebook… It just seems very unnecessarily complicated.
Would you use this site? If not, are there improvements that could be made that would change your mind? No, I personally would not use this site. Not only is it overly confusing, but nothing special stands out about it to me. I actually cant wait to stop writing this review so i can close the browser. It was very confusing and just annoying. No, I cant say that there would be any improvements that could be done to make me change my mind, because I find the overall concept of the website pointless.

  5. I think i have mentioned most of it above. Besides that, i suggest that in ur home page, u should let the visitors know what good features u have to attract people. U also can add slideshows or video about ur site, about how ur site works. If u make it a slideshows it’s really look professional. But u can add video also, but make sure the video is short, about 1mins is enough. People doesnt have patient in watching long video. And the picture in ur homepage. I think u should change it to something related to video discovering. Such as a tv connecting to the public. I think what u have to do is to show people ur site can help them and it’s convenient and easy to use.

  6.

Visit https://www.frequency.com. Spend no more than 5-10 seconds on the home page. What do you think the site is about?
For the first time i visit, i saw the picture, i tot i some fighting, then i saw the facebook, cnn and etc logos. i tot is a news video channel. Then i saw the sentence said sign up to get all to video…. Then i just realize that this site is a video collecting site, which i can search video and watch it from this site. I suggest that u should highlight the sentence.
    Sign in with facebook.
    Done, It’s convenient.

    Done.
Go to https://www.frequency.com/topic/egypt and hit auto-scan. What do you think this does? What do you think of it?
I have a little confuse about the auto scan feature. Is it letting people watch the highlight of the video or make the video load faster? As i can see, it doesnt make the video load faster. So i consider it is showing the highlight of the video. I can say the feature is great. It let people know what is the content of the video. I never really see this feature in any other site.
How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors?
I saw most of ur video is from youtube. I have a good question to ask. why dont i watch video from youtube directly? this is the point to attract more visitor joining ur site if u can figure out. I suggest that u add more feature that u have and youtube doesnt have. Add some more useful feature. Like ur auto scan is really great.
Would you use this site? If not, are there improvements that could be made that would change your mind?
Not really. Because i would prefer watch video from youtube. But if u have feature which is useful and youtube doesnt provide i would use ur site. I have some feature suggest for u. U can add a search feature which is more accurate. Then u can allow ur user to enter their interest or hobby. With these information u can recommend them the video that is match their interest. recommend them video that is most popular. If a user like to read news, then u recommend the top news. If the user like football, ask for more specific detail like which team or player. Then u can recommend the video related to their interest. This is really a good feature which can attract people.
Please share any additional feedback/comments you may have.
For the front page, it’s simple. i like simple, but it’s too simple. U can add some information or description about ur site. let people know hw ur site works. What good feature u have. What reason they should use ur site. Make ur site look professional. Ur listing for the trending is good.

Go to https://www.frequency.com/topic/egypt and hit auto-scan. What do you think this does? What do you think of it?

I see protests in Egypt.  I think Auto-scan previews a whole lot of videos.  If that is the purpose of auto-scan, the it seems like a good way to check out a lot of content in a short amount of time.

How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors?

The main competitor I would think of is Youtube.  But it seems like your site is almost like a video bookmark site that actually gets its content from Youtube.  Could you clarify?

It also appears to show what is trending.  It seems like Frequency is a hybrid of Twitter and Youtube.  Very interesting.

But Youtube has videos on the homepage, and it appears your site is organized by channels.  I would expect you to have videos on your homepage.  If that is what you do, then why don’t you have at least a scrolling box showing the most popular or trending videos?

Would you use this site? If not, are there improvements that could be made that would change your mind?

I might.  At the present, I don’t see how your site delivers content over Youtube, or even a site that shows popular clips like http://www.bestofyoutube.com
People want content now and not have to search through video channels to find it.  I would like to see you streamline your content offering so it can be found without searching channels.

Please share any additional feedback/comments you may have.

    Actionable suggestions:
    1) Have a scrolling video box on your homepage that shows the top trending videos.

    2) Since you have a big banner about Egypt on your homepage, I feel like you are connected to Egypt and the chaos there – which is not a positive connection.  I think you need to separate your brand from your videos.  The current way you are presenting the top viewed videos is with a banner.  That is typically how your brand is delivered.  I think you should re-think this strategy and separate yourself from your content offerings.  If you are connected to Egypt, as you presently brand yourself, I would not want to use your services.  Not a positive branding.  I think you would solve this segregation issue if you make your banner look more like a video with a play button in it versus a panoramic picture that looks like a banner.

    3) Perhaps you could offer an explanation on your homepage of how your site works.  I don’t understand how the people are the “Most Active” on the bottom right hand corner.  Could you explain how to be most active.  I assume it is by posting videos or something like that.  But I am confused because your videos appear to be sorted by channels.  How do people contribute and are active then?  could you please explain this?  It would help if you explain in a FAQ section or a “how it works” on the homepage.

  8. Visit https://www.frequency.com. Spend no more than 5-10 seconds on the home page. What do you think the site is about?
From quickly scanning the homepage, I gathered that the site allows users to view all videos from their favorite sites, media players, and uploaded content in a single space. I imagine that this would be similar to social scanning tools that allow marketers to collect all posts and news about their business in a single, aggregated e-mail message, or through a messaging center. My bet is that this improves upon a “favorites” list in YouTube because it allows users to pull in videos from YouTube, as well as the NYTimes, and Facebook – if so desired.

    Sign in with facebook.
    Done.

Follow a couple of channels you are interested in.
Done. I followed Vimeo, Disney Pixar, and E!. Although they didn’t initially show up in my “following” channels, a quick refresh fixed that problem.

Go to https://www.frequency.com/topic/egypt and hit auto-scan. What do you think this does? What do you think of it?
I think it’s some sort of list refresh. It scans for the most up to date content within that specific category. It was hard to tell, exactly, though, because this is not commonplace lingo, and the list was already up to date, so it seemingly did nothing. I certainly think you should either rename this icon, or clarify with a pop-up, or even just a few words below that explain its purpose. Without being asked to do so, I may never have ventured to click it, as “auto-scan” doesn’t solve any known problem for me without further definition.

How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors?
I think this site is good, but that some of the competitors’ sites are better organized. It wasn’t organized in a way that helped me as the user navigate the site well. Most successful sites have mastered creating an easy and clear user experience. It’s easy to access my account, my videos, my feed, my friends, my info – because, really, in a site that’s all about making it easier for me to view videos, I don’t want to have to work to get to them. Also, there seemed to be a lot of content, even still. Too much. I couldn’t find a way to [in a reasonable timeframe] “favorite” my top videos from the feeds I was following. What if I want to collect videos from my feeds in my own mini library – how am I able to do this? How do I access “My Account” – I understand now that by clicking on my tiny username in the upper right corner, I’m able to see my account, but, this isn’t obvious, or clear to users. I think you have a cool concept, but there are some navigational issues that should be worked out, first.

Would you use this site? If not, are there improvements that could be made that would change your mind?
I might use this site, although I’m not big on following news clips via video. I’d be more likely to do this if it allowed me to follow additional media besides videos, such as podcasts, newspapers, blogs, photo journals, etc. I want to create my own personal library composed of my favorite publications across a range of varying media options.

Also, as mentioned above, I’d make it more clear how a user can access their feeds, videos, and account. Consider adding such tabs across the top. It’s great they you’ve created tabs for topics, channels, and people – but I’d imagine this could be consolidated into a single tab, “Search”, which, after being clicked, users could then distinguish between a channel, video, or person search.

I would make it more clear how people can connect through social media and what the benefits of following all these channels are. How do you make my life easier with your service? I want to know in one or two sentences with ten seconds of coming on your homepage. This can be accomplished, often, through the creation of a quick instructional video on the homepage. This allows the personality of the site to come through (look at how fun, quirky, and intelligent we are!), as well as clearly describes your service offering to the site visitor.

Please share any additional feedback/comments you may have.
As mentioned above, I think you have a good site here. It needs some work, but the major concept is good. Develop messaging to accompany your concept. When organizing tabs and features, always think in the prescriptive versus the descriptive, i.e., how does this apply to my customer. It’s not always about the site’s capabilities, because you may have the most advanced concept in the world, and if no one can figure it out, you might as well not have it at all. Keep working at it, and thanks for letting us review. It’s certainly exciting to see all the ways in which we are learning to connect and compile social media and other media! Best of luck!

-In my point of view. My first  5-10 seconds on the site considering that I do not know its functions yet. I thought it was a news site because of the Image that you use at the top (Egypt) currently.

Go to https://www.frequency.com/topic/egypt and hit auto-scan. What do you think this does? What do you think of it?

-From what I observed. Auto-scan shows you the first 15 seconds of the video, actually it starts from 15sec-30sec having a total of 15 seconds in length, not only that, after it finishes playing the first clip, it automatically goes to the next one which saves user from the effort of clicking through the clips. I think the Auto-Scan feature is pretty nice. It’ll actually save a lot of time for people who just loves to browse some of the videos content and it’ll also save us the effort of clicking through the videos. On the other hand. It takes away the freedom to select the order of the videos it’ll play. It automatically plays the next video on the left panel. If we’ll be able to select through the videos it’ll play. Then I’d say this Auto-Scan feature is perfect.

How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors?

-To be honest, I can’t see any competitor sites, I don’t consider youtube or other video source site as a competitor since the videos on this site are also from youtube andu others. I consider this site more comparable to photobucket.com but you don’t need to upload your videos here. You just need to save the link and thats it. If there are competitors or other sites that provides the same feature then I would gladly see how they work and by then I can give my opinion on how this site’s compete with other. But for now. I’d say this is a very interesting site.

Would you use this site? If not, are there improvements that could be made that would change your mind?

-I might use this site since it allows you to share video (by linking) to friends. It is also easier to share videos this way compared to other sites which requires uploading a video but in this site you just need to put the URL. If you have your own youtube channel then this site can be helpful by means of sharing. But there is something that confuses me. Youtube also has those feature to share videos and like them. Now I don’t see what other stuff can be done in this site aside from the fact that it helps me share. I have this thinkilng that this is a social networking site but only has videos and comments. Makes me wonder. And another thing. I will use this site because this will allow me see what are the videos my friends shared that I missed. Will be a great way to keep track of what they are up to.

Please share any additional feedback/comments you may have.

-First I would like to show my appreciation to the design. It is very calm and professional. The white color makes it more professional so yeah. Another thing I would like to commend is the flexibility of the site to show only videos from specific source. For example from facebook only, twitter only etc… It is also a good thing that you use your own site to advertise such as job openings. Now on the other hand. You need to have an FAQs, for example, send an email survey to users once in a while to know how is your sites doing, its just that your website lacks something and that is FAQs, even though you already have the “HELP” link. We still need the presence of FAQs. And you might also want to add a PMB(Private Message Board) for users who always use your site. If you already have that function on your website then make it easier to see since I was not able to find it.

Overall. You have a great website and in my honest opinion you just need to provide more functions or services. Considering the fact that your service is “UNIQUE” you need more of those to stand out. Keep up the great job.!

My first impression about the website is that it is a streamlined, video/multimedia platform, specifically designed for the purpose of sharing multimedia through social networking devices. The feel and look of the website is very modern, almost twitteresque with an influence of youtube, via the media channels on the bottom left. On first glance, it really does look simple, appealing, and interesting to a unique visitor.

Started following ESPN, Break, Apple, Archer, Vimeo, and Hugo Boss. There is a huge selection of channels and it is very neat that you guys utilize graphical logos to represent each one. This is a smart move.

Go to https://www.frequency.com/topic/egypt and hit auto-scan. What do you think this does? What do you think of it?

Completed. I hit auto-scan, and the video player on the immediate right started reloading and played an MSNBC clip. I think this is VERY cool. The function of it is obviously to scan through the media air/radio/web/waves and search for relevant happenings. The listing to the left was all relevant and also updated. I scrolled through and found some interesting articles. I’ve got to say, it is very neat indeed.

How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors?

I can’t really think of an exact competitor since your guys’ site seems like a new hybrid. It is a mix of Twitter, YouTube, CNN, and other news channels. But all of these elements are compiled, especially with a focus on the twitter aspect. Because of this, I’m quite fascinated by what this website has to offer and how it can be utilized. The huge amount of channels and varied content is also a great attraction because I realize that Frequency is not only a specialized service, but also can gather information about ANY type of issue or topic that you may be interested in, from fashion, to sports, and politics. Very cool. The site design also is very top notch; clean, simple, and functional. A+

Would you use this site? If not, are there improvements that could be made that would change your mind?

Yes, I would use this site. In fact, I have already shared it with a few friends today and they have responded positively. The only improvement I can really think of right now, is that you guys improve on the graphical representation of the popular topics and popular people. The rounded blue bar looks really sloppy with the overlapping text, and it seems out of place since the rest of the website is so clean and well designed. That is the only thing that seems out of place in terms of functionality and visualization. Also, maybe if you guys implemented some sort of personalization aspects, such as being able to personalize your homepage by changing colors of the background and links, kind of like how people spend a lot of time customizing the looks and features of their youtube homepages, I feel like people will spend a LOT more time perusing the various channels, videos, and most importantly, MAKING THEMSELVES a part of the frequency experienced as vested interests.

Please share any additional feedback/comments you may have.

Similar to above, increasing the uniqueness of the website, aside from the novel concept; by allowing a profiles system, avatars, some type of novel voting system like you tube uses on their videos (likes, popularity, bookmark, promote, ranking) etc. All these new features will make this website much more interactive, interesting, and more fluid like a living being. That is the real definition of a successful social website. Overall, I really enjoy the site and have actually added it to my bookmarks menu. Bravo.
    – In the mainpage, I would make is so that the FREQUENCY banner logo is clickable. This is so that just in case someone would like to return to the main page or refresh, it will be obviously accessible by clicking the main banner.
    – I think that since you guys are just starting out, featuring a tutorial video on how one can use frequency in their daily lives and how to get through it and get the most out of it would be very informative and interesting. This will allow people who aren’t as familiar with social networking sites and twitter/youtube, to understand how easy and intuitive such a website can be. A visual or video is generally much easier to digest than a text description, so it might be worth including a simple explanation tutorial video introducing your service.
    – Overall, I am very impressed with the design and functionality of the website.

  11. Visit https://www.frequency.com. Spend no more than 5-10 seconds on the home page. What do you think the site is about?
At quick review of home page, it seems this is away to group all your social network videos in one location.  It allows you a “one-stop” view of your favorite video feeds rather than going to each location.

    Sign in with facebook.
Done. This was completed quickly and easily.

Follow a couple of channels you are interested in. I tried to search for a topic that I would be interested to follow, but it was not easily found.  The suggested channel categories could be expanded to include for different walks of life… EXAMPLES:  include an Animal/Pet category for animal lovers, a Christian/Religious category for those who follow those videos, possible an Inspirational/Motivational category for positive videos.  I scrolled through the channels listed, but found it cumbersome to find what I maybe interested in by going channel by channel.

Go to https://www.frequency.com/topic/egypt and hit auto-scan. What do you think this does? What do you think of it? I thought this would search for all the videos listed on Egypt.  It took some time for the first video to load.  Seemed to take a few seconds longer than when I was searching for a channel I might be interested in.
The feature is nice, as it allows you to watch a few seconds of each video that is in the string of videos as result of the search topic.  I am not sure if it is a glitch in the feed or the time of day trying to use the feed, but some of the videos did take time to load.

How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors?
I cannot say I am aware of competitors that allow you to link all the channels you like to follow in one area since you can link them to your social network sites or from YouTube.  I am sure if you had videos from other video sites such as GodTube, Google Video, Current, etc you would have more channels available to those interested.
Would you use this site? If not, are there improvements that could be made that would change your mind?
I  would be more interested in using this site if it was easier to find the channels you are interested in following.  I found the category list to be short.  Many of the video sharing sites have many more channel categories that could be used to sort on this site.  Also, is there a way to classify or list your favorite videos.  I would like to see the ability to create a “queue” or “playlist” of videos that you might like to watch.  Maybe that feature is available and I did not discover it.
All in all, I do believe having the ability to follow all your favorite video channels on one site would be great to the avid video watcher.  Again, if you had more categories or an easier way to sift through different channels that would help. Also, once you find a video you might be interested in, I think being able to make your own queue to watch would be great!

One first look I think the site is about watching and sharing video, it’s kind a wannabe YouTube.

I signed in with Facebook. In the process of signing up I had no problems

I chose USA network & The Daily Show.

Go to https://www.frequency.com/topic/egypt and hit auto-scan. What do you think this does? What do you think of it?

It brought up video and clips on Egypt. I think it has a good search feature most of the results were relevant returns.

How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors?
It makes it easier to post video to Facebook than some other sites and the layout is nice, and user friendly.

Would you use this site? If not, are there improvements that could be made that would change your mind?

I would use this site. It has links to some of my favorite networks in one place.

Please share any additional feedback/comments you may have.
I like this site overall. I think it was easy to like a channel. The site is easy to navigate. It was easy to select channels. The video posts right to your Facebook page. It doesn’t look bad once it’s there. There are a lot of video clips. But it links to the full video if it is available. I really think this site has potential.

Go to https://www.frequency.com/topic/egypt and hit auto-scan. What do you think this does? What do you think of it?

Auto-scan shows you the only first 15 seconds of the video and then automatically shows the following videos to you, which is really a time-saving for those people what are looking for someone determined part or just would like to check quickly the news.I can go into details on part what I want without waiting minutes (compared to Youtube for example) .

How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors?

With this Auto-Scan function I think that this site is the best compared to the competitors, because of you can checks the part of the videos what you want.

Would you use this site? If not, are there improvements that could be made that would change your mind?

Yes, but it is not so clear for me how can I get to the different functions of the site and I am missing the like option too.

Please share any additional feedback/comments you may have.

I love the design of the website, it seems to be really professional.

It seems like you’re trying to have multiple purposes, but neither come across clearly. By making your main marketing byline “get videos from Facebook and Twitter”, it seems like you’re just trying to pull information from an existing news feed (which is pretty cool, by the way), but then you have additional channels, trending, etc. So, I’m fairly sure you’re going for an overall effect of one-stop for videos, news, etc. To make this more clear, I would swap the text that’s in your main banner with the text in the “headline” underneath.

Sorry, I’m not a facebook user; however, I really like that you’ve added the Facebook connect API, as there are a lot of people who do use Facebook, and I think the idea of aggregating news feed and user share videos to one source is a very ingenious use of Facebook Connect
Follow a couple of channels you are interested in.
First, I checked out AppJudgement; it looks like you’ve pulled all of their recent video reviews and archived them to allow playing on your site. The player is pretty slick – I like the “green dots” loading screen, but you might want to also include the word “loading” or “buffering” to let people know what’s going on. I’m also going to remark that the channel pages load pretty slowly. I took a peek at your source to see why, and there is a TON of whitespace, and a lot of in-line CSS. If you already have a stylesheet (which you do), you might be setting yourself up for rendering issues by having classes defined in multiple places; the formatting was all blown out and out of proportion until it finished loading.
Next, I checked out Big Screen. I want to point out that, with the three-line title, the actual link to tune into the channel is buried under the div element below it. Since the formatting works so well for the other channels, I’m not really sure if I would increase the vertical size of each element, but maybe a smaller text size would help alleviate that problem. I like the hover effect you’ve put in with the CSS, by the way. This channel loaded much quicker, so I’m guessing the page load issues were more related to the video player that AppJudgement uses for their content.
As a quick suggestion – since one of your marketing “goals” is social discovery, it would be a good idea to have suggested/related videos right on the player page from other channels, if they’re related. I would also like to suggest letting users tag or comment on videos (maybe I just am not seeing this because I didn’t register?)
Go to https://www.frequency.com/topic/egypt and hit auto-scan. What do you think this does? What do you think of it?
I like the concept; you’ve taken videos and broken them up into segments, and, if I see it right, the auto-scan will skip the current segment and go to the next one, allowing people to move forward quickly in a video if it isn’t very interesting. Word of warning; if the video hasn’t fully loaded, all it does is re-start the video, and if I autoscan to the end of a video, it just repeats the same one instead of skipping to the next. When I saw the button, I assumed it would either skip the video or something similar, like an auto-scan on a radio.
update: NOW I get it. It truncates all the videos, and then you can hit “watch full clip” or just hit auto scan again to switch to full video watching. That is VERY slick, but maybe there should be a java tooltip or even just an html title tag over the button explaining what it does for people who aren’t intuitively clever (like me?). It does exactly what I thought it would do, but I didn’t realize it was doing it because I kept hitting the button.
How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors?
Personally, I like it much more than YouTube, which I’m sure is the main competitor. However, for a site marketed as “social”, there is very little interaction without being signed in. Again, tagging, allowing users to suggest related videos, or to even create a topic would be great, and it would mean less work for you once people start really using it.
Would you use this site? If not, are there improvements that could be made that would change your mind?
Yes and no. For me, the main selling point is the variety of channels, the trending feature, and the organization of video by topic. However, I’m really “missing” the ability to contribute to these trends, to suggest videos, to create my own channel, to create my own topic, etc. These sorts of things are what would really make the site “social” and based on user interaction, and could really make your site/service stand out.
    Just some formatting/layout suggestions:
    – When I’m signed in, the area to comment/share/etc is crushed in the bottom of the page, and it’s very hard to see or read when scrolling. Obviously, the video needs to take up the prime screen real estate, but you need to do something with the layout. I use a 17″ widescreen display with a high resolution, so I’m fairly sure the issue isn’t unique to me, but it seems notebook un-friendly. Part of this is the amount of space you’ve delegated to the video playlist on the left – there’s just too much space on the left hand side. Also, having all of the page elements scroll independently might not be the way to go – this is one of those places where you should make multiple versions of a channel landing page and test it with Google’s Site Tester (through Analytics) to see where the preference is, because, though I might not like the independent scrolling playlist and lack of real estate for comments, other people might love it.
    – There is, for me, too much white in the page. It’s very clean, but at the same time, it’s uninspired. One thing that could help would be getting a very light background color under element titles, just like you have in the headline. It could break up the white and make each element really stand out. You could also have a static background with all other elements “floating” above them (since you defined all of your page layout in div’s, this would not be hard to do with CSS)
Please share any additional feedback/comments you may have.
I tried to sprinkle in suggestions throughout, but a couple more things I noticed:
    – When I’m not signed in, I always get the same banner. Are you intending to always have one static banner? I would suggest either having a different banner load each time (advertising different topics) or using a java/flash slideshow with different banners.
    – Mobile site? The fastest growing market is mobile/tablet/netbook users, and the current layout isn’t very mobile friendly for the 3.5″-7″ screen
    – Again, clean up your code. Put your style references in your stylesheet and keep it out of the page source; when you have CSS in multiple places, it gets very hard to make visual changes or layout changes.
    – When on channel pages, or watching videos, why not give users the option to collapse/roll up the toolbar on top? The frequency logo could still be floating in the upper left, but that would give users more screen real estate.
    – If you’re going to keep with the format on the video playback where the playlist and comments scroll independently, give an option for comments to pop out like you have your login box.
