  1. How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors? I google searched for few site which is similar to ur site and is the location is at canada. I compared ur site to http://www.canadianresidentialrentals.com, i found that ur site is more easy to use than them. Ur site is simple and have a search feature at ur home page which i can directly search it. But i suggest that for the search option list, the colour should be brighter. Because it’s a little bit hard to see. Other is that ur navigation is good. For the searching feature, i found that when i search for detailed rental example like province, city and bedroom. It often have no listing. I suggest that u can list somewhere the result is near to the searched detail instead of giving none result. This can make people feel that it’s not working. Or if u dont have any listing for the specific area, dont list it in the search option. Ur information about the rental is good. But if it is possible u can list down the price when the result shows up instead of clicking for more info about the specific rental. What people really concern is about the price.  Ur site also listed ur clients logo. Which is really great. This can gain trust on people. Then i compared ur site to the http://www.rentboard.ca, Their site looks abit confuse as they put too many option in the home page. But it’s not bad, because they list down all the places for visitor to click and they also listing down the available date. After i click on 1of the place, it show up the type of rental. Is convenient just abit confuse with it. I think u can do it this way. I suggest that u keep ur search feature in front. But the search feature oni allow visitor to choose the province and city. After that they hit the search button and the result wil come out. Show some sample apartment or hse that available then let them choose if they wan to have how many bedrooms and etc. list it down if possible. Make sure arrange it well.
What do you find bothersome? What do you like?
What i like is that ur background color is nice and it’s attracting. U have a map, listing down all the option. It’s easy to use. But it take some time to load the page. Which is a little slow. U have a video to let people know more about ur business. Then u list down the latest rent related tweet. Ur sign up process is very easy. It have the option to choose weather landlord, tenant n etc. All this i really like it. It’s very convenient. U have connect ur site with facebook, twitter, etc. Which is really good. This can allow more people to know about ur site. What i found bothersome is that the feature landlord slide. I think u should place it somewhere at the bottom. Not in the middle. Ur page took some time to load.
Would you pay for a listing? If not, why?
Firstly, i want to know ur target client is in which aspect. If it si local, Seriously, if i dont read newspaper, i dont even watch advertisement, i would sign up for it. But if i read newspaper, y dont i find it in the newspaper? If ur target client is around the country and the world then i will sign it up. Because if im from other country or city, i dont know anyone and i dont have any information.
What do you think of the sign up process?
I mentioned it above. It’s easy and convenient.
Please share any other feedback/comment you may have.
I suggest that u should add more service to attract more client. Such as, listing down the cheapest, list their quality. All these people will really want to know and newspaper dint mention about it. Add more service or information which newspaper or other advertisement dint have. Ur page looks professional. U have the payment method badge which make people feel secure. Have the client company logos. I think u can add a feature which can allow people directly enter any msg they want to u or the rental. This will be more convenient.

How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors? I think that this site is visually more appealing and easier to navigate and use than other sites. The interactive rollover-mouse map is a nice feature.
What do you find bothersome?  I find the 3 vertical columns at the bottom with the latest tweets, blog, and YouTube video bothersome. I think they should be in a separate link/tab that people can opt to go to if they want. That stuff not only crowds the site and makes it look a little overwhelming, but can be a visual distraction. Sometimes simplicity has its benefits.
What do you like? As i stated before, I really like the rollover map for some reason. Interactive features like that always get my attention. I also like the scrolling pop-out bar with pictures/links to the actual landlords. The site gives different options; search by property features or by landlord.
Would you pay for a listing? If not, why?    Yes, I would. The listings on this site seem very well exposed and recieve a lot of traffic. Im sure if i was a real estate professional this site would benefit me.
What do you think of the sign up process? Simple and to the point.

I definitely like the large “Help” button on the site. Most sites you have to go searching around in a corner for a tiny “help” link. That is definitely a unique, useful feature.

How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors?
I compared you to Apartments.com – Upon first glance your homepage to be very similar, only yours is in purple, and apartment.com is in light green (and for the U.S.)
One obvious difference is that Apartment.com has two sponsored ads (unrelated to apartments on homepage -front right hand corner- and you do not give away as much ad space on your homepage.
One thing apartment.com has that you do not is a “Moving Center” that provides resources and tools to help a person move.  I would suggest you look at it to see if you could incorporate something similar for your site.
What do you find bothersome? What do you like?

Bothersome – First, on your blog page, the left-hand side has a column that talks about Tenant/Renter and a lot of detail in the paragraph following.  Same for Landlord/Homeowner.  I think you should summarize what you are saying.  You don’t want to overload a user with information they don’t ask for.  If they have to wade through a lot of words (info. they aren’t looking for) a person may feel overwhelmed.  I would also recommend putting the titles of the blog posts on your blog as links and allowing a person to choose the blog article they want to read if it interests them, or just putting up the most recent blog post and provide and archives link to older posts.  That way they are not overwhelmed by all the scrolling and too much info.

I like how you are integrated with the social networks.
I like the verified Paypal logo and the partnered apartment logos.

Would you pay for a listing? If not, why?

If I was looking for an apt. in Canada, I would.  I think it would help speed up the process and save me time and effort.

What do you think of the sign up process?

Registering was simple and easy.  Nothing complicated at all.

Please share any other feedback/comment you may have.

Actionable suggestions:  I honestly do not have many complaints with your site.  There are not obvious errors or glitches to pick out.
I do recommend eliminating the wordiness on your blog page.

On the tenant page, I don’t think the orange and dark green strip across the top (that says my username is logged in) compliment each other.  I would suggest using a lighter green.  The orange and purple on homepage work, and the orange and dark red work (fall colors) but I think you could pick a lighter green. Or a true green over a pine green.  See the University of Miami’s colors for example.

  4. How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors?

I looked up sites like yours based on areas in Canada.  Your site is more easier to understand and to navigate.

    What do you find bothersome?

In the middle of your “homepage”, you have the lastest “blog” but yet you have a link to the “blog”.  There is no need to have the “blog” on the homepage when you have a link to it.  The “blog” on the “homepage” is pointless and is taking up room.

    What do you like?

I really like the “contact” information.  You provide an address, phone number, and e-mail.  You make it easy for your clients ro contact you.  I like the “map it” and “search it” that you provide.  It makes it easy for people to use your service.

Would you pay for a listing? If not, why?

Yes I would.  I find this site very useful for both tenant and landlord.

What do you think of the sign up process?

First off, I seen nothing on the “homepage” which stated “sign up”.  I clicked on “login” in hopes that I would be able to sign up through there.

I was able to sign up through the “login”.  The sign up process was simple and easy to understand.  I like the links on the side “my account”, “shout out corner”, etc.  I find those links very helpful.

Please share any other feedback/comment you may have.

Overall, I think your site is good.  It is easy to understand and easy to navigate.  Your site looks professional and I like the color use.

    Suggestions:

As I stated above, there are things on your homepage which is not needed.  Again, there is no point in having the “blog” on your homepage when you have a link for it.  You could put a video in its place.

There is no link for “sign up”.  There is only the link for “login”.  “Sign up” link should be different than the “login”.  The “sign up” link should state why signing up is a good idea and what your company can provide.

There is no “About Us” link which I feel is very important to any site.  “About Us” link should give some history about your site or company and let the client know what your service provides and what makes it different than other sites.

You should have a link for “feedback” which allows people who use your service to give feedback on what they think about your service or how your service has helped them.

  5. How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors?

For reference, the sites I compared rentseeker.ca to were: rent.com (by eBay), apartments.com and rentcanada.com.

As for visual appeal, I feel rentseeker is on par with apartments.com and better than rent.com or rentcanada.com.  The design is clean, friendly, modern and coordinated.  Despite the bold colors, it’s easy to look at.

As far as usability, it is also on par or above the standard of the other sites.  I did see that Rent.com has a “Popular Cities” feature that would be a nice addition if it did not compromise the user friendliness of the first page (Rentseeker.ca only has 4-5 choices).

Also, RentSeeker has much more content on the home page than the other sites.  That much information could be confusing to website users. I would like to see a more condensed version like the one on Apartments.com or rent.com.

I think the search sorting features are on par with other websites, though I find a horizontal options bar easier to use than one on the left side of the page. Apartments.com has a good example.

I especially like the ability to Tweet or send to Facebook the properties you like.  This was either not available or not very visible on other sites.

What do you find bothersome? What do you like?

I like the sleek, modern design and simple search interface with many options, but not so many that it would be confusing to the user.

I did not like the pictures on a separate tab in the property listing page or the scrolling thumbnails.  That looks a little amateur in style for such a nice site.

I do think the management of the property listing page, in the area of the photos, needs to be tweaked.  Most other sites have left/right arrows to scroll through the pictures, then you can click on the photo to maximize.  I did not like the thumbnail/vertical scroll feature of Rentseeker as it was more difficult to use.

Also, photos should be visible on the main tab, not on a separate tab.

I would also like to see the home page lose some clutter. The areas for “Latest Tweets” etc could be reduced to 1/3 of the size with a button to expand if the user desires.

Would you pay for a listing? If not, why?

If I were looking for a place to advertise Canada property, yes, I would pay for a listing.  I can see right at the top of the home page that this is the #1 site for these types of listings and, though there are some flaws, the site is fairly easy to use.

What do you think of the sign up process?

The sign up process was simple and it was nice that there was no email verification required.  I would like to note that there was no “Signup” text on the home page.  I had to figure out to click “Login” in order to sign up.

Also, if this were my site, I would consider adding a Facebook connect option with a link on the home page.  This is the simplest way to currently sign up for sites and saves the user the hassle of filling out yet another form in order to use a site.

Please share any other feedback/comment you may have.

I just noticed that when I’m logged in, the links for my account are out of alignment on the left sidebar on the search page.  I’m using Firefox 3.6 and this should be a simple stylesheet issue.

Also, all your advertisers banners are at the bottom of the page.  I think some could be incorporated into the left sidebar.  Users won’t see them in their current location.

I enjoyed reviewing the site and hope my input assists in your future success.

  6. How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors?

It seems similar and compares similarly. However, minor differences in graphical design and content placement can be the key between raving popularity and minimal existence. I checked out sites like apartments.com, and even though you both offer the same services and have a similar theme. I found apartments.com to be much more visually and user-interface appealing. Not only are the colors employed providing better contrast, but the website seems more streamlined due to the lack of clutter. Sometimes, too many resources and too much content can be a negative. Although it seems contrary to thought, the fact that you guys have so much resources smashed on your homepage, and that I have to scroll over and over to get to the bottom of the page, makes me less prone to utilize your services. Whereas apartments.com, even though it lacks a twitter/blog/video etc., the homepage is so much cleaner and less cluttered, and because of this graphical strategy, it SEEMS easier to use. I think they made it a point to emphasize simplicity, and in something as complicated as rental/geographical searches, this type of strategy is a smart one.

What do you find bothersome? What do you like?

The first reaction I had to seeing the website was, wow, there is way too much stuff going on. In fact, it almost gave me a near headache. I see a tiny infographic map, really tiny text next to it listing cities. All of this is washed out in gray, even though there are graphical line breaks, the color is the same monotonous gray everywhere. Then I see these giant ‘landlord sponsor’ graphics, which are shiny, bright, and large; this makes me think of sponsorship advertisements or spam, and I am less inclined to click on them… even though they look far more appealing then the tiny infographic/application device above. This is a PROBLEM. The fact that attention is more prone to be given to the graphics at the bottom, which have nothing to do with the website service, means that attention is not being diverted efficiently. I should be engaged and interested in the map and using it to search for rents, rather than immediately looking at the nifty, flash landlord widget. To solve this, make the landlord widget smaller, and put it further below the main application. This way, attention will be given where it is needed most.

Would you pay for a listing? If not, why?

I probably would not. Once again, this is similar to my points hashed on earlier. I find that the website is so convoluted, flooded with random links to blogs/videos/twitter/facebook, in that it takes away from the central function of the website. Which is to help find listings and sell things. The site needs to be cleaned up MUCH MORE and made more professional, while still integrating all the social services, in order for me to think it is a good place to pay for a listing. Right now, from my general standpoint, I’d rather place a listing on a site like apartments.com until there is a clear improvement.

What do you think of the sign up process?

The sign-up process was relatively simple and easy. However, maybe if you were really motivated to get people to sign up, you would have a better graphic/interactive graphic, or perhaps even a sign up tab that hovers at the top/side of the page that will be more eye catching to potential visitors than a bland, stationary orange login button. Nonetheless, the registration process was very painless and simple. This is just a suggestion.

Please share any other feedback/comment you may have.

The infographic on the main page; the text and the map itself, but mostly the TEXT, is far too small. I have perfect 20/20 vision, and even I had to squint to make out the names of the cities. If I were you, I would increase the size of the infographic as a total package, including increased font size. It is far too small to be eye-catching or informative.
From a graphical design perspective, the main template is WAY TOO WASHED OUT. The site itself is attractive and has good graphical work and layout, but the color scheme is far from optimal. The background light grayish color is the exact same as the main template, so the whole interface just muddles together in a wash of gray. Add to that fact that the ‘apartment rental search’ query boxes are all the same washed out gray color with slightly darker gray text, and you have yourself a very eye-straining experience. I would use black text on the gray query boxes, or even better yet, use a better contrasted query box. It really does make a difference.
I would clean up the formatting in the bottom template, where the contact info is listed, along with ‘apartments for rent in’. I would remove the unnecessary spacing from the info and the title, and keep them more flush with one another. Right now it looks like a rookie design error.
As much as I think the rental blog, tweets, and videos are a great resource and idea; keeping them so prominently on the front page, and especially taking that much space, simply adds to the clutter problem on the website. I’d much rather use a clean interfaced GUI with good resources, than a complicated, cluttered, confusing GUI with excellent resources. A lot can be said about first impressions. You guys might have the most excellent resources, but if someones first impression of the website is that it is crammed and cluttered, they will likely not return. This is the draw of simple websites like kayak.com. Clean, simple, uncluttered design without too much info everywhere. Try to condense your design (incorporate a twitter feed as a small widget on the sidebar or at the footer/header or something). Why do you need to take an entire 1/4 page of space with tweets? Makes the homepage that more unwieldy and unappetizing.

  7. How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors?

I think that your site compares with some of your competitors when searching for apartments in Canada.  However, I think your site is more user friendly and gives a lot more information.  Is it too much, that would depend on the person. I also think that your site is more eye catching to the reader and gives them everything they need at a click of a button

What do you find bothersome? What do you like?

I think the biggest problem I had was the speed.  When I was doing searches for 1 bedroom apartments, it took a while to load.  If I was actually looking for an apartment, I probably would have closed the window and searched for a different site that was faster to load.
I like the colors of the site and all the information that you have.  I do like the fact that you can search by landlord or property Management Company.  I do know in the States, that there are some companies that renters avoid and some they love.  By knowing this information right away, it helps with the decision process or avoids any delays by not knowing this information up front

Would you pay for a listing? If not, why?

If I was a landlord, I would probably consider it.  This would be no different than advertising in the paper or by other means.  I did check the costs and it looked in line with other advertising venues (newspapers, magazines, etc)   However, if I never received any calls on the listing, I might have to rethink continuing with using the site.

What do you think of the sign up process?

I think that the sign up process was easy and was self explanatory

Please share any other feedback/comment you may have.

I like the FAQ’s that are listed for both the tenant and landlords, gives them all the information needed.  I also like the fact that you included phone numbers to call in case a question was not listed.
I think that the site is laid out nicely and the colors complement each other

  8. How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors?
I went to google and searched canadian rentals and found the site Rentboard.ca.

Comparing to two after just 5 seconds visually your webiste is much more appealing.

Your site had a nice bold map and is very much interactive with the color change when you scroll across.

You have a great quick search box that your compeiter doesn’t have. In fact the other website doesn’t have search box at all.  Your search box is a real winner in comparison, the other site features an alphabetical list which is quit short in it’s listing.

Both sites give the property features but your site is the only one that allow a person to narrow down the results based on them.

All in all the sight can’t compare with yours.

What do you find bothersome? What do you like?
    Pros:
You have a very detailed property description box.

Nice display map with property listing on them with a great detailed window that pops up when your move the cursor onto it.

    Very detailed contact information.

It’s great that you have a find a roommate tab. I would just make sure it’s monitored to make sure all of the content is acceptable.

Equally nice and descriptive tenant and landlord pages.

I really liked that you have videos under the help page but I would consider moving them to the tentant and landlord pages. Sites like these are not to complicated to follow and I would like for more people to be able to view them.

    Cons:
It seems that you have a very limited search options. I tried to do several mock searches only to find no results for them. Your site seems so detailed that it was disappointing to not see very many options.

I clicked on the student section there were some proviences that had no school information. If they have no listing maybe you should consider taking them off the list. Again I did a mock search and found no result. Is there any way to make sure all of listings will come back with listing available?

I would consider breaking up some of the information on the homepage. You have marketing, blog and related tweets. The information is great but it really takes away from the homepage. I like to see all of the most important information on the home page and then click on the tabs to get more detailed information.
Would you pay for a listing? If not, why?
If I was in real estate I would possibly consider paying for listings but other than that I would not.

What do you think of the sign up process?
Quick, fast and easy. Great tabs for easy personal information access.
Please share any other feedback/comment you may have.
I see that you have marketing and marketing services info listed on your site. Maybe you should put a tab at the top of the page for it.

  9. How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors?
I find your page design to be very professional in appearance. The contrasting color of orange against the blue is visually appealing. The Map and search boxes will make it easy for your potential clients to navigate through your site. It is very comparable to your top rental websites.
What do you find bothersome? What do you like?
I personally do not find anything bothersome about your website. I like the professionalism and easy access of information. Although you have chosen to add other elements to your front page such as blog information, video and other pertinent information, it is done so in a very organized, yet not overwhelming way. Good Job.
Would you pay for a listing? If not, why?
Yes I would definitely pay for a listing on your site. I would feel that my potential tenants would have ease of access in finding my listing.
What do you think of the sign up process?
    Concise and too the point.

  11. How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors?
The design is very user-friendly with simplicity for viewing the overview, photos, details, map, etc. of each listing.  By Providing an icon in addition to the wording of the feature the navigation is extremely helpful to those who may not be familiar with similar sites.
What do you find bothersome? What do you like?
I would like to be able to navigate to the MY TOOLBOX bar on other pages within each listing instead of only being on the Overview page on each listing.  I feel it would make navigation less cumbersome if you are in a listing and want to get back to the other listings.
Would you pay for a listing? If not, why?
I would be hesitant to pay based on the information on the site, as a landlord, I would want to know more of your successful listings in my area.  I would be more inclined to call than to pay without speaking to someone for more detailed information.
What do you think of the sign up process?
    It seems very easy.

  12. How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors?
I reviewed 4 rental websites in Canada and I will have to say I like yours the best.  They had a ton of extra things scattered all over the site that made it hard to navigate.  I really don’t have a ton of time to waste and need a site that will give me the information right away.  The other sites took much longer to find the information I needed.  Your colors and tabe are bright and work well.
What do you find bothersome? What do you like?  I really liked the separate tabs at the top for the tenant, student and landlord.  I especially liked the student section.  It’s broken down very nicely and quick to use.  I like the fact that the landlord can do their accounts on their own, but you have help available.  The help and contact section are great and gives all your information.  The roll over map is a great feature, but took a very long time to load.  The videos are very helpful and the list below gives all the necessary fee information.  I had to really search for the fees, so you might want to put that somewhere else.
Would you pay for a listing? If not, why?  Yes I would pay for the service.  The fees seem very reasonable for the service given.
What do you think of the sign up process? The sign up process is very simple and straight forward.
Please share any other feedback/comment you may have.  It’s a great easy site to navigate and get quick results.  It allows for social networking which is very important these days.  The part that I liked the best is the separate tabs for your different clients.  I didn’t find that on some of the other sites.

  13. How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors?
In comparison to other similar sites/competitors rentseeker.ca is more appealing to the eye, user friendly and easy to navigate around. It is a definite go to site for the apartment rental industry.
I like how fast the response of the site is, how there are categories to refine your search as well as the additional apartment rental marketing services that are offered for apartment seekers.  I wish they expand to include the US apartment rental industry.
Would you pay for a listing? If not, why?
More than likely I personally would not pay for a listing because I am quite budget conscience.
What do you think of the sign up process?
The sign up process is very straight forward and easy. No hassles at all.

I hope that this site expands for locations other than just Canada. I would definitely use is on both sides as a landlord as well as a tenant.  The site is very modern and user friendly and I think that they are right on target with utilizing current technology by providing integration to social media sites Facebook and Twitter.

  14. How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors?
I googled Rental apartments in Canada to give myself a spectrum of sites to compare to, and found your site to be much smoother than your “googled” competitors. Your site design is sleek and the button links are large, giving it a level of ease of use the other sites can’t brag. You also have a better hook to listers who may be interested in advertising their properties (i.e the video on the home screen). Overall a much more useful site.
What do you find bothersome? What do you like?
Honestly i cant say i disliked anything on your site, though i think more emphasis on the rental properties available on the home screen would be good. and a “those who viewed this also viewed this” box when you look at each property may help streamline finding the right property for each visitor. I really liked your search refinement options not many people would think to ask “hey, does this place have security cameras?” but your site made me think about it.

Would you pay for a listing? If not, why?
I would, but i’d be hesitant because even though there is the video on the importance of advertising, you dont have your “viewers per day” listed anywhere i saw, and i didnt see any way to tell if anyone used your site. These facts would help to ensure the landlord that their money isn’t being wasted or ill directed

What do you think of the sign up process?
Easy, plain, exactly what it needs to be.

Googling “apartments in toronto” i didn’t see you until page 3 halfway down. As a teen, i’m gonna tell you that i have never gotten all the way to page 3 on google when looking for apartments or rental houses. Just saying, I usually look closely at a few from 1, then skim some from 2 and then start seeing repeat listings. by that time i’m done looking.

  15. how do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors?
The site is very simply put and straight forward. I loved how easy it is because usually sites like this are complicated and takes very long time to look for what you need. I think the creator met the goal that he/she needs from the cutomers unlike many sites that put so much in one place that the whole site becomes hectic and unbearable.
What do you find bothersome? What do you like?
well since I live in the us, it was bothersome that us map wasnt on there. but other than that, really the set up is amazing, the animation is beyond awsome. I simply cant believe how fast and how simple the layout is yet everything needed is there.
Would you pay for a listing? If not, why?
yes I would. first is as a seller, I would want a buyer to find me accurately and simple (without giving him a hardtime). so the animated map does so. I see that a buyer will simply look at the map and choose which city, BAM, my house is exposed. now for the simplicity, If the buyer is having hard time finding me, he/she will most likey not gonna get the chance to find me, specially with websites that have so much going on.
What do you think of the sign up process?
Sign up was amazing easily specially that I didnt have to fill out a whole page just to get approved. BUT the signup button should be on the first page next to the log in. It was kind of lucky to find it. the process itself is easy, but the button should have been clearer.

The website overall is great but some of the pictures need some improvement, like the logo magnifing glass or the logout/login button, just redo them with photoshop or something. but amazing easy website.

  16. How do you think the site compares to other similar sites/competitors?

It works very similar to other websites that are used to find an apartment or to find a tenant.
What do you find bothersome? What do you like?

There isn’t anything that I find bothersome.  It is nice that there is a blog for information.  I also like the fact that it is free to view listings.

Would you pay for a listing? If not, why?

I would pay to post a listing but I wouldn’t pay to view listings.  There are too many places that you can see ads for free.

What do you think of the sign up process?

It is easy but for landlords, you should be able to see the fees for listing before you start the sign up process.  It states right on there “There will never be any contracts or hidden fees.”  In my opinion, there is hidden fees because everything else is free and it doesn’t tell you before you enter information that it is going to cost you per listing before it asks for you to enter your email address and password to create an account.

Overall, this is a very good website for finding a rental or a tenant.  You can filter the information by location, price and size of the rental.  That is always a nice feature because you don’t have to look at the listings that definitely do not suit your needs.
